What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the world's third largest health care profession. Chiropractic is a natural, holistic form of health care, which uses no drugs, medicines, or surgery in its application.

Chiropractic is a healing technique which is based on a simple premise: the body is able to heal itself. This healing is directed by a part of the body which is called the central nervous system, or CNS. The CNS consists of two quite complex components, the brain and the spinal cord. These two organs control the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system in the human body.

The brain itself is a computer-like organ which governs over the function of the body. The brain communicates to the tissues of the body through the spinal cord, which is protected by the many bones of the vertebral or spinal column. The spinal column consists of approximately 35 vertebrae through which spinal nerves branch out between and supply the entire body. These nerves create a "feedback loop" which returns to the brain, allowing it to monitor the function of every tissue and organ in the body.

However, vertebrae can lose their normal motion or position and the nerves which run between them can lose their proper function due to the improper movement of the vertebrae about the nerve causing a "pinching" of the nerve. This improper movement can be caused by trauma, repetitive motions, drugs, alcohol, poor posture, emotional stress, as well as numerous other causes.

This loss of motion and function can effect nervous system control and function of associated organs and tissues--a common condition which Doctors of Chiropractic refer to as the vertebral subluxation complex, or VSC.

The VSC itself consists of several different components:
  • Kinesiopathology: joint damage or immobility.
  • Histopathology: inflammation and scar tissue formation.
  • Myopathology: loss of muscle strength and formation of muscle spasms.
  • Neuropathology: pain and improper body function.
  • Overall Health Damage

The function of the Doctor of Chiropractic is to restore this lost joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints which have become "stuck" or hypomobile. Restoring mobility to the joints is of utmost importance since it is joint immobility which allows for the development of spinal tissue degeneration and deconditioning. It is the chiropractic adjustment which effectively can restore proper mobility to these joints in the body.
